Connecting to "shemp" via Remote Desktop |
First, why would you want to connect to shemp.cs.mtsu.edu? The server known as shemp runs Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and provides you with essentially the same environment and software found on the Microsoft Windows systems found in the KOM labs. Using Remote Desktop enables you to use a CS Windows machine platform without actually being in the KOM labs.
If you have never used Remote Desktop, search the web for instructions or use one of the following sources:
For MTSU CS courses, you will use Remote Desktop
to connect to the computer shemp.cs.mtsu.edu
(aka 161.45.167.244).
You will use the same information you use to log on to the
department Linux systems (e.g., ranger.cs.mtsu.edu)
to log on to shemp. Say your C-number username on
ranger is c8243940, then on a Windows 7 PC the
login screen would look like the following:
On other systems you may get a "Logon settings" screen, in which case for "User name" and "Password", use the exact same information you use to log on to the department Linux systems (e.g., ranger.cs.mtsu.edu) but be sure the "Domain" field is set to "CSD".
For even more information (perhaps too much!), the following, from a third-party ISP, might be useful: Using Remote Desktop Client.
If you don't have Remote Desktop installed by default (for example, your operating system is pre-Windows XP or you are running MacOS X) you may use this link to install Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Client (or for Apple Macintosh).
